Japanese Govt HF Demand - TIMELY FOR IVY

01/12/2004 Japan's Government Pension Fund to start investing in hedge funds

DJ Newswires reports Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund, one of the world’s largest pension funds, may start investing in hedge funds before the end of next fiscal year in March 2006. According to the fund’s executive investment officer, Noboru Terada, the primary purpose of such an investment would be to earn bigger returns than those on shareholdings, and that he would not view such a move as investing in a new asset class. As a government agency, GPIF needs government approval to distribute funds to specific asset classes. Terrada said that he would use hedge fund investment “within the framework of actively managed shareholdings,” as the government committee would likely approve such an investment. As for allocating money to alternative investments as a separate asset class, GPIF will not likely adopt such a strategy until after it becomes an independent government entity in April 2006, when it will establish an internal investment committee. GPIF’s investments in domestic and foreign assets totalled Y50.06 trillion, as of the end of June.
