NEW YORK (HedgeWorld.com)—Since returning to Kingdon Capital Management LLC in 2002 after a sabbatical spent teaching fifth grade in a Bronx public school and running his family’s foundation, Alan Winters has propelled the global long/short equity hedge fund forward in terms of investor relations and risk management.
Now Kingdon has made Mr. Winters its chief operating officer, a new position. As such, he will coordinate all financial and administrative functions, as well as investor relations, risk management and human resources, according to a news release from the US$3 billion firm.
“Alan has been instrumental in the significant growth and development of our company,” said Kingdon Capital President Mark Kingdon in a statement. “This appointment recognizes his contributions, as well as our aspirations to be ‘best in class’ in all elements of our business.”
Mr. Winters first started working at Kingdon in 1986. When hired, he was the firm’s second investment professional, and by 1997 he was a portfolio manager and chief investment officer. He left the firm in 1998 to pursue personal and philanthropic interests, including teaching, running his family’s charitable foundation and working with University Settlement in New York, which assists immigrants and low-income people with a variety of services including adult literacy classes, mental health counseling and group and family day care.
